UK Credit Cards

Which card should I get?

When deciding which card is best for you there are three main factors which you should weigh up

  • Rates and fees:
Interest fees on credit cards tend to be very high, but they do vary greatly between companies. Some companies provide interest free periods
  • Repayment options:
Credit cards will either insist on you repaying a minimum repayment per month or a percentage of the outstanding balance, usually around 5%
  • Penalities:
Some companies have penalty payments fro late or returned payments or if you exceed your credit limit
  • Perks: These may include discounts, free gifts, cashback on purchases or the prestige of owning a certain card

So how do I decided?

  • Do you intend to repay the balance in full every month?
if a card which offers a longer interest free period and no annual fee is probably the most appropriate
  • Do you intend to pay the minimum amount eac month?
if you intend to use the card for ongoing borrowing you should look for a card with a shorter interest free period and lower rates
  • Do travel frequently or for long periods?
then you may wish to obtain a card which allows you to pay by direct debit
  • Are you bad with money?
then perhaps you should reconsider getting a credit card! If you still wish to get a card you should bear in mind the penalties for late payment etc.
